What is a sensory friendly/sensory accessible performance?

Sensory friendly shows are shows with lessened lights, and sound. They also have an adapted Front of House. The Aim is to make the shows as accessible to those with sensory issues as possible. Learn more about different aspects below.

*Note that this information is specific to Acme's winter show, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.*

Adapted Front of House (FOH)

  1.  A full sensory guide for the show with detailed descriptions and pictures of every part of the show will be available for audience members. The guide is written from the perspective of someone with a sensory processing disorder to help prepare people for every potential trigger warning, sensory shift, or otherwise unpleasant situation in the show. A digital version of this guide can be found HERE.

  2. Sensory friendly kits with earplugs, fidget toys, and a pen and a pad of paper for non verbal communication will be available for audience members during all performances. Sound canceling headphones and sunglasses, will also be available. These kits will be in the lobby of the theater.

  3. In the theater itself, there will be seats towards the back of the audience that will be reserved for those who need more personal space and the ability to leave the theater more easily.

  4. There will be a quiet area in the lobby that people can go to at any time. It will have a white noise machine.

  5. There will be an option to watch the show from the lobby via a monitor. This monitor has audio and live video.

Adapted Sound

  1. During sensory friendly performances ALL sounds will be quieter and dampened. This lessens some potentially overwhelming audio effects.

  2. All speakers will produce the same amount of volume. This is done in order to lessen the sensory impact of different speakers playing different levels of sound.

Adapted Lights

  1. There are no strobing lights during this performance. However, lights do shift and there are periods of blackout.
